Regina Spektor Announces New Album Out of the Blue!

Regina Spektor Remember Us To Life Album Cover

It’s finally here! After four years, four months, and one day of (relative) silence, Regina Spektor will finally release a new album. Just yesterday she announced her first record since What We Saw From The Cheap Seats in 2012 or You’ve Got Time in 2013, if you want to count the theme song to Orange Is the New Black. Regina acknowledges this hiatus in her announcement e-mail, stating that:

I wasn’t just doing nothing all of this time (though I did do nothing some of the time 🙂

I also made a record.”

And this record, titled Remember Us To Lifewill be out on 30 September 2016, with the standard edition featuring 11 and the deluxe version including 14 songs, respectively. You can preorder the album in various shapes and sizes on the Warner Music Store. The lead single, Bleeding Heart, which I’ve been listening to since I got up, is already up on Spotify and YouTube:

From the deluxe edition tracklist for the album I have gathered that we might not have heard a single song before, which would be new for Regina. In the announcement e-mail, she confirms that the album has “all new songs on it.” Songs 11 and 13 (The Visit and The One You Stayed and the One Who Left), however, could both possibly be a song she performed live two years ago, known among fans as “Stay”, though this is just a wild guess based on its lyrics.

Here is Remember Us To Life‘s full tracklist:

  1. Bleeding Heart
  2. Older and Taller
  3. Grand Hotel
  4. Small Bill$
  5. Black and White
  6. The Light
  7. The Trapper and the Furrier
  8. Tornadoland
  9. Obsolete
  10. Sellers of Flowers
  11. The Visit
  12. New Year
  13. The One Who Stayed and the One Who Left
  14. End Of Thought

Since the individual parts to the moving image on her official website have variations of  Track 8’s title (Tornadoland) as their file names, we might also already know the style of this song’s single cover. Of course, this could also just be a coincidence.

We don’t know much more than this, other than three more songs will be available through preordering before the release date in September. I’m sure, however, that Regina will break the silence much more often for the rest of the year, especially when it comes to shows and concerts. If you live in the Chicago area, you can already get tickets for her upcoming appearance on the PBS Soundstage. The rest of us will have to wait for the world tour that’s likely coming soon. Are you excited? Because I’m excited.

I’m looking forward to hearing the rest of her new stuff, especially since I like the first single so much already. It’s a rather different sound for Regina this time around, somewhat electronic, synthpop-y, which could go either way. Judging from past experiences, however, from when she’s dabbled in jazz, blues, pop, rock, and rap music besides her usual “antifolk” tunes, I’m almost positive this will be a record to remember.

Although Regina doesn’t usually limit herself to one topic for her albums, Far did focus a lot on religion. If the preliminarily titled Party Upstairs, another new song she’s only performed live so far, is included on this album under a different name, the album might follow a coming-of-age-theme. Just take a look at the lyrics to the first single, Bleeding Heart, which seem to be about social anxiety during high school.

Regina Spektor Bleeding Heart Single Cover

What you got on tap, I’ll take two of that
I’m chasing a story I heard
When I was here last, at the back of the class
You pretended you never got lost
You’re at the back of the class and the back of the bus
Sitting out at the dance, always saying ‘no thanks’
When they see you around, you look down at the ground
But when they walk away, you wish they’d stay

Never, never mind, bleeding heart, bleeding heart
Never, never mind your bleeding heart
Never, never mind, bleeding heart, bleeding heart
Never, never mind your bleeding heart

You can’t help but stare at everyone there
It’s you versus everyone else
Your outfit’s a crime, you feel their cold minds
Placing you under arrest
And you serve your time drinking all night long
Staring at the walls of your jail-like home
Listening to that song ’cause it hurts just right
Till everything is gone tonight

Never, never mind, bleeding heart, bleeding heart
Never, never mind your bleeding heart
Never, never mind, bleeding heart, bleeding heart
Never, never mind your bleeding heart

Never, never mind, bleeding heart, bleeding heart
Never, never mind your bleeding heart
Never, never mind, bleeding heart, bleeding heart
Never, never mind your bleeding heart

Some day you’ll grow up and then you’ll forget
All of that pain you endured
Until you walk by a sad pair of eyes
And up will come back all the hurt
And you’ll see their pain as they look away
And you want to help but there’s just no way
Cause you won the war, so it’s not your turn
But everything inside still burns

Never, never mind, bleeding heart, bleeding heart
Never, never mind your bleeding heart
Never, never mind, bleeding heart, bleeding heart
Never, never mind your bleeding heart

Never, never mind, bleeding heart, bleeding heart
Never, never mind your bleeding heart
Never, never mind, bleeding heart, bleeding heart
Never, never mind your bleeding heart

Never, never, never mind, mind, mind
Never mind your bleeding heart
Never, never, never mind, mind, mind
Never mind your bleeding heart
Never, never, never mind, mind, mind
Never mind your bleeding heart
Never, never, never mind, mind, mind

How long must I wait,
Till you learn that it’s not too late?
How long must I cry
Till you know that you really tried?
How long must I try
Till you learn that dreaming’s hard?
How long must I dream
Till you heal your bleeding heart?
Never mind your bleeding heart
